The storyline of Dying Light 2: Stay Human takes place in Villedor, one of the last human settlements fifteen years after a global viral outbreak. You play as Aiden Caldwell, a Pilgrim (a wandering survivor) searching for his long-lost sister, Mia.
Here's a breakdown of the main story elements:
The Search for Mia: Aiden travels to Villedor after hearing rumors that Mia might be there or that a man named Waltz, who experimented on Aiden and Mia as children, might know her whereabouts.
Factions and Choices: Villedor is divided between two main factions vying for control:
The Peacekeepers: A militaristic group focused on order and control.
The Survivors (Bazaar): A more independent group living in an old church, prioritizing community and freedom.
Later in the game, a third significant force, the Renegades, led by the brutal Colonel Williams, emerges.
Shaping the City: A key feature of Dying Light 2 is that your choices significantly impact the world. By siding with different factions in main and side quests, you can alter the infrastructure of the city, unlocking new parkour opportunities, traps, and faction-specific benefits.
Moral Dilemmas: Throughout his search, Aiden is faced with numerous moral dilemmas, forcing him to make difficult choices that affect the lives of the people in Villedor and his relationships with key characters. These choices determine which faction gains more influence and can lead to different story paths and character fates.
The Truth About Mia and Waltz: As Aiden delves deeper into Villedor's secrets and his search for Waltz, he uncovers a complex and unsettling truth about his past, Mia, and Waltz's motivations. Waltz is revealed to be searching for Mia as well, and his connection to the GRE (the organization responsible for the initial outbreak) is central to the plot.
The GRE Database and X13: Aiden's quest leads him to a hidden GRE database containing information about the experiments he and Mia were subjected to. He eventually discovers a secret GRE facility called X13, which holds the key to the truth he seeks. However, activating X13 triggers a failsafe protocol with devastating consequences for Villedor.
The Final Choice: The climax of the game forces Aiden to make a critical decision: save Lawan, a key Survivor character he has grown close to, or try to save Mia. This choice, along with previous decisions regarding factions and other characters, determines the game's multiple endings.
In essence, Dying Light 2's storyline is a personal journey for Aiden to find his sister amidst the backdrop of a city on the brink of collapse. It emphasizes player agency through impactful choices that shape the narrative, the world, and the ultimate fate of Villedor and its inhabitants.
