The 2020 God of War serves as a soft reboot and a direct sequel to the previous games in the series, shifting the setting from Greek mythology to Norse mythology. The story focuses on Kratos, the former Greek God of War, and his young son, Atreus, as they embark on a perilous journey in the Norse realm of Midgard.
Key Plot Points:
Faye's Wish: The game begins with the death of Faye, Kratos's second wife and Atreus's mother. Her final wish is for her ashes to be spread at the highest peak in all the nine realms.
A Mysterious Stranger: Shortly after Faye's cremation, Kratos and Atreus are confronted by a powerful and mysterious stranger (later revealed to be Baldur, a Norse god and the son of Odin) who attacks them. Kratos is surprised by the stranger's invulnerability.
The Journey Begins: To fulfill Faye's wish, Kratos and Atreus set out on a journey through the dangerous Norse wilderness. Kratos, who has kept his past as a god hidden from Atreus, must now teach his son how to survive and fight.
Meeting Allies: Along their path, they encounter various characters who aid them, including:
Brok and Sindri: Two dwarven brothers and master blacksmiths who forge and upgrade Kratos's weapons and armor.
The Witch of the Woods (Freya): A powerful Vanir goddess living in exile who provides them with guidance and magical assistance.
Mimir: The "smartest man alive," a head imprisoned by Odin, whom Kratos and Atreus eventually free to gain his vast knowledge of the Norse realms.
Facing Threats: Their journey is fraught with danger as they face various Norse monsters and also come into conflict with the gods of Asgard, particularly Baldur, and Thor's sons, Magni and Modi.
Atreus's Powers: During their travels, Atreus begins to manifest god-like powers, hinting at his true nature. This leads to Kratos reluctantly revealing his own divine past to his son.
The Truth About Faye: As they get closer to their goal, they learn more about Faye's true identity. It is revealed that she was a Giant from Jötunheim and that she deliberately chose Midgard as their home and set them on this path.
Reaching Jötunheim: Finally reaching the highest peak, which is in Jötunheim (the land of the Giants), Kratos and Atreus discover murals depicting their entire journey and prophecies about the future. Atreus also learns that his Giant name is Loki.
The Cliffhanger Ending: As they return to Midgard, Mimir warns them that Fimbulwinter, the three-year-long winter preceding Ragnarök, has begun. In a dream, Atreus sees Thor arriving at their doorstep, setting the stage for the sequel, God of War Ragnarök.
The 2020 God of War is a more personal and character-driven story than its predecessors, focusing on the evolving relationship between Kratos and Atreus as they navigate a dangerous new world and confront their pasts and destinies.
