The storyline of Saints Row (2023), including the Gold Edition which contains the Expansion Pass, revolves around a group of four young friends in the vibrant fictional city of Santo Ileso, located in the American Southwest. These friends decide to ditch their unsatisfying jobs and embark on a criminal venture to become "Self Made."
Here's a breakdown of the main story:
The Premise: You play as "The Boss," a customizable character who, along with their roommates Eli, Kevin, and Neenah, are struggling to make ends meet. Eli is a business-minded entrepreneur, Kevin is a thrill-seeking DJ, and Neenah is a skilled mechanic and getaway driver. Despite being loosely affiliated with existing gangs (Kevin with the Idols and Neenah with Los Panteros), their loyalty lies with each other.
Leaving Their Jobs: The Boss initially works for Marshall Defense Industries, a powerful private military corporation. After a series of events, including being denied a bonus despite apprehending a notorious criminal, "The Nahualli," and then getting fired for failing to protect a valuable artifact, The Boss becomes disillusioned. Similarly, Eli, Kevin, and Neenah are also facing their own frustrations with their current paths.
Forming The Saints: Realizing they can achieve more by working for themselves, the four friends decide to start their own criminal organization. They take over an abandoned church as their headquarters and adopt the name "The Saints." Their initial motivation is to cover their living expenses and student loans, but their ambitions quickly grow.
Turf Wars: To establish their dominance, the Saints engage in a turf war against the three established factions in Santo Ileso:
Los Panteros: A muscle car and melee-focused gang involved in smuggling and protection rackets.
The Idols: An anarcho-communist collective focused on chaos and disrupting the status quo, known for their vibrant style and high-energy activities.
Marshall Defense Industries: A heavily armed private military corporation seeking to impose order (on their terms) on the city.
Building a Criminal Empire: As The Saints take over territory, they establish various "Criminal Ventures" – side businesses that act as fronts for illegal activities and generate income. These ventures range from a laundromat that cleans crime scenes to a food truck dealing in more than just food.
Key Story Moments:
Early in the game, the Boss helps Marshall recover a Mayan artifact, the Hummingbird Codex, only to be fired when the Idols steal it.
The Saints rob a heavily guarded train carrying Federal Reserve cash with the help of the Nahualli, forming an uneasy alliance.
The Boss helps Eli win a LARPing tournament against a strict Marshall superior, Gwen Theriault, as a way to undermine the corporation.
The Saints work to dismantle the leadership of the rival gangs, including Sergio Velez of Los Panteros.
The Boss infiltrates Marshall's headquarters, leading to a confrontation with a disgruntled board member, Myra Starr, who seeks to usurp the company's founder, Atticus Marshall.
In a climactic showdown, the Nahualli betrays the Saints, kidnapping Eli, Kevin, and Neenah. The Boss must rescue them and defeat the Nahualli.
The Gold Edition and Expansion Pass: The Gold Edition includes the base game and the Expansion Pass, which provides access to three post-launch expansion packs. These expansions add new missions, storylines, and content to the world of Santo Ileso, further expanding the Saints' criminal empire and introducing new threats and opportunities.
In essence, the storyline of Saints Row (2023) is an origin story, detailing how a group of ambitious and resourceful friends rise from ordinary citizens to become the dominant criminal force in Santo Ileso. It's a narrative filled with action, humor, over-the-top scenarios, and a focus on the bond between the founding members of the Saints. The Gold Edition enhances this experience with additional story content through the Expansion Pass.
