You play as Jesse Faden, a young woman with a troubled past who arrives at the Oldest House, a seemingly ordinary Brutalist skyscraper in New York City that is actually the secret headquarters of the Federal Bureau of Control (FBC). The FBC is a clandestine U.S. government agency tasked with containing and studying paranormal phenomena, known as Altered World Events (AWEs) and the objects they create, called Objects of Power (OoPs).
Jesse is drawn to the Oldest House by a telepathic message from a mysterious entity she calls Polaris, seeking her long-lost brother, Dylan. Years prior, Jesse and Dylan were involved in an AWE in their hometown of Ordinary, which involved a slide projector OoP. The FBC arrived, captured Dylan, and Jesse escaped with Polaris, who has been her constant inner companion ever since.
Upon entering the Oldest House, Jesse finds the Bureau under attack by a hostile supernatural force known as the Hiss. The Hiss is a resonance that infects and controls human minds, turning them into chanting soldiers. The Bureau's Director, Zachariah Trench, is found dead, seemingly by suicide using the Service Weapon, a powerful and sentient OoP that can change forms.
Guided by Polaris, Jesse picks up the Service Weapon, which immediately designates her as the new Director of the FBC. She is thrust into the chaos, tasked with reclaiming the Oldest House from the Hiss and finding her brother, who the Bureau believed had the potential to become the next Director.
Key Story Arcs and Themes:
Jesse's Search for Dylan: This personal quest drives the main narrative. As Jesse navigates the shifting architecture of the Oldest House, she uncovers clues about Dylan's time at the Bureau and his connection to the Hiss invasion.
The Mystery of the Hiss: Jesse and the surviving FBC agents, including the pragmatic Head of Research Emily Pope and the enigmatic Finnish Janitor Ahti, work to understand the nature and origin of the Hiss and find a way to stop it.
The Nature of the Oldest House and the Bureau: The Oldest House itself is a character, a "Place of Power" with paranatural properties. The game explores the FBC's methods of containing and studying the anomalous, often blurring the lines between science and the supernatural.
Objects of Power and Abilities: Jesse gains new abilities by finding and binding to various Objects of Power scattered throughout the Oldest House. These abilities are crucial for combat and exploration.
The Board and the Astral Plane: The FBC is guided by a mysterious entity known as the Board, a black pyramid residing in the Astral Plane, an alternate dimension. The Board communicates with the Director through the Hotline, an OoP. Jesse's relationship with the Board and its intentions are a significant part of the overarching mystery.
Polaris: Jesse's inner voice and guide, Polaris, has a deeper connection to the events unfolding in the Oldest House than initially revealed. Its nature and purpose become clearer as the story progresses.
The Remedy Connected Universe: Control contains numerous allusions to Remedy Entertainment's previous game, Alan Wake, and the AWE expansion directly connects the two universes, establishing a "Remedy Connected Universe."
The Ending (Without Major Spoilers):
The game culminates in Jesse confronting Dylan, who has been influenced by the Hiss. She also uncovers the truth about Polaris and its role in protecting her and the Bureau. Jesse ultimately manages to sever the Hiss's connection to the Oldest House and contains the immediate threat, officially taking on the mantle of Director. However, the lockdown of the Oldest House remains, and the full extent of the paranormal world and the Bureau's work suggests that Jesse's journey is far from over.
In essence, Control's storyline is a mind-bending journey into the paranormal, blending action-adventure gameplay with a compelling narrative filled with mystery, intrigue, and a unique sense of atmosphere. It's a story about a woman searching for her brother who unexpectedly becomes the leader of a secret organization battling forces beyond human comprehension.
